The roller briquetting press is a kind of briquetting machine that is widely used in the industry area today. Those powdery materials and waste, which need to be used in the furnace; those fuel materials, which need to be formed together to get a better heating effect, and other materials, which need to be used as a shape like ball or pillow with certain size, etc. all need the roller briquetting press to take the briquetting work.

In this roller pressing area, there are two same pressing rollers with ball-pockets on the surface, which rotate at a constant but opposite speed. When the material enters the bite angle between the two rollers, it is gradually compressed as the bite angle is reduced. At the moment when the two ball-pockets coincide, the briquetting pressure reaches a maximum and briquette is made. then, the two ball-pockets are opened and the briquette begins to elastically expand and fall off.

But not all kinds of materials need to add binder to make the briquette. Some materials have its own inherent binding properties. When we are working under the proper conditions, suitable moisture, suitable pressure, suitable briquette size, suitably designed plant, etc., it will be suitable to make the briquette without binder.

But most of the materials need to add binder to the briquetting process, add binder not only reduce the pressure required on the briquetting process, but also improve the characteristics of the briquette.

Force feeder is used as a homogenization and initial material compaction as well as overcoming the resistance of flow caused by damming in the outlet. It provides beneficial effects of an increase in material pressure, an increase in the compaction degree, and ensuring the uniformity of the flow, is a means of metering, deaerating and pre-compacting material. If the cohesive forces (particulate cohesion, valence forces, recrystallization, van Der Waals forces) between the particles are low, a binder has to be used before agglomeration. The physical properties of the feed material, the end use of the briquettes and the cost of binder addition have to be taken into account before a selection is made.

The amount of binder to be added depends on the binding properties of the raw material and the binding agent. The densifying and binding ability of the briquette machine also determines whether a binding agent is necessary or not. That is, use of a briquette machine with high pressure would reduce the need for use of a binding agent.

Following its industrial development in the 70s and 80s, hot briquetting is now a fully-accepted, reliable technology for the passivation of direct-reduced iron (DRI) to turn it into the more convenient form of hot-briquetted iron (HBI).

Materials are briquettable under hot conditions if binding characteristics are activated at high temperatures. The most common application is the production of hot briquetted iron (HBI) from direct reduced iron (DRI), whereby the feed is charged to the roller press while still hot as it leaves the reactor. Alternatively, materials can be reheated, as for example in the hot briquetting of converter dust.

This involves the use of high-temperature resistant steel, the water-cooling of various machine parts as well as inertisation of housings to prevent re-oxidation.

Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. Because, during hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, the well known problems caused by reoxidation, overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions

Due to the differences among materials, some of the materials will be heated in a heating chamber and then briquetted in the roll press, like steel mill residue, lignite, etc. to get use of the material from its high temperature plasticity and some of them is only briquetted from its raw temperature like HBI.

This new micro model enables to make briquetting and compaction-granulation feasibility studies on a wide variety of products in very small quantities (about 0.5-1 kg for one test, a few kg/h in continuous use). Another advantage of this equipment is that the pieces in contact with the product can be easily and rapidly dismantled, cleaned and reassembled. These many pieces can be handled without any particular tools.
