In this study, an analytical perspective is used to develop a fundamental model of a jaw crusher. Previously, jaw crushers were modelled in regard to certain aspects, for example, energy consumption (Legendre and Zevenhoven, 2014) or kinematics (Oduori et al., 2015). Approaches to date have been mainly property specific. In this work a physical modelling approach has been used to derive the modules, which are based on established facts of comminution machines, from the literature. A modelling methodology mainly inspired by Evertsson has been applied (Evertsson, 2000). The modules are divided into kinematics, flow, breakage, capacity, pressure and power. Each module has been derived and tested decoupled from the other modules to provide increased transparency of the module and its behaviour. The results of the modelling are presented for a baseline case of one industrial-scale jaw crusher and compared to manufacturer data. Future work will include validation and DEM simulations.

In the operation of the jaw crusher, the amount of dust generated has an important relationship with the throughput of the ore and the crushing efficiency of jaw crushers. The density of the tooth, the tooth shape and the tightness degree and wear degree of the jaw plate are the important factors that affect the efficiency of crushing.

Usually, there is a screen before the crushing chamber, and only the ore larger than the screen size can enter the crusher. However, under the existing conditions, the screen is very easy to be blocked. If the screen is not cleaned up in time, a large amount of ore will be blocked in the crusher, so that the ore that can pass through the screen without having to be crushed may make the crusher block. Then the ores are crushed repeatedly, which makes the generation of dust increase.

The original jaw plate not only has a small number of teeth but also a large tooth model, which is not conducive to crushing iron ore with high hardness. At present, the dust-proof system is adopted and the independent pump supply system is applied to reduce the amount of dust emission. The water pressure is adjusting to 0.6 MPa or above, and the spray nozzles with good nebulization and large spray angle are selected.

During the operation of the jaw crusher, the dust is mainly produced in the crushing chamber, and internal pressure and relatively obvious airflow are formed in the crushing chamber and the discharge port. Therefore, the generated dust is mainly discharged from the discharging port.
